If we were together this Sunday, worshiping as a faith community within the walls of the church building I know one of the hymns I would pick for us to sing; “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” As we look to Psalm 31 we hear the words “rock” and “fortress” mentioned a couple of times. I have to wonder if these words were not synonyms for David as he hid from Saul and his army among the rocky Judean hills. As I read the first five verses of this psalm the opening words of this traditional hymn came flooding into my memory; “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing. Our helper He amid the flood of moral ills prevailing.” How fitting these words are for today as we continue to transverse this pandemic, often placing our trust in what the scientist, health officials and politicians are saying. We need to hear what they are saying but we need to place our ultimate trust in the Rock & Refuge that is our God – the One who never fails!
